The Pump Centre proudly stands at the forefront of collaborative industry projects, one such example being our partnership with major UK water companies to create the WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical & Electrical Specifications).
What is WIMES?
WIMES provides a consistent and uniform set of guidelines and requirements for the design, installation, and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment used in water and wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, and other water-related infrastructure.
This Pump Centre initiative facilitates productive collaboration across the industry. A collection of documents, descriptive text clauses and data sheets, WIMES creates a comprehensive framework of the sector's standards which are frequently reviewed to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements. The increase in the accessibility of information regarding new and developing technologies allows water industry engineers and manufacturers to accelerate the uptake of industry improvements.
Who Has Input in the Creation of the Specifications?
The Pump Centre collaborates with the UK’s major water companies in the creation of WIMES. The documents are subject to regular reviews and updates directly from the water companies and manufacturers themselves, keeping them in line with the latest industry standards and regulations to ensure full compliance. Documents relating to new technologies are being created and added as they are developed, aiding and expediting their incorporation into existing systems. Pump Centre members can also suggest their own amendments or improvements to the organisation, their hands-on experience using the documents within daily work informing their perspective and improving comprehension and readability for their fellow industry professionals.
Why is WIMES Important to the Water Industry?
The water industry is constantly evolving, be it because of innovation within the sector or to meet new objectives and guidance. As the sector transitions into Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8), there is further impetus to develop and improve technologies to meet its challenging environmental and operational targets. This is not a task which can - or should- be undertaken independently or exclusively by any single organisation within the UK water industry.
How Can WIMES Be Implemented by Water Industry Professionals?
Manufacturers can use WIMES in the production of key components to ensure seamless integration into any equipment, optimising the performance and reliability of mechanical and electrical installations. Industry engineers at every level rely on WIMES in the development and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment systems across the UK to maximise the interoperability and efficiency of their equipment.
