Description
Connor McCafferty, Wastewater Treatment Team Leader at Scottish Water, presents a trial of a portable aerated reed bed at Moscow Wastewater Treatment Works and explores how an operations-led idea becomes a structured innovation trial.
Connor leads a wastewater treatment team within Scottish Water’s Clyde 1 operational area and brings first-hand operational experience of the trial from the initial site review through to the results.
The trial uses a hook-lift, container-mounted reed bed as a lower-energy, quickly deployable nature-based polishing stage at a small rural works. The session covers the unit’s design, installation and monitoring, including nine weeks of daily sampling across summer 2026 against the SEPA consent limits for BOD and suspended solids.
Key Topics Include:
-
Outlining how the portable aerated reed bed works and why it suits a small works with a specific polishing requirement
-
Exploring the results from 45 paired sample days, including reductions in suspended solids, COD and BOD, consent compliance, and where the bed does not remove nutrients
-
Highlighting the practical lessons from the trial, including flow and load data, sludge accumulation, site integration and unresolved maintenance ownership
