Thames Water is one step closer to delivering £840 million worth of major capital projects aimed at enhancing its wastewater and water treatment sites, following the publication of its Procurement Specific Questionnaire (PSQ) for suppliers.
The UK’s largest water and waste water company plans to deliver the 10 projects which form an essential part of its record infrastructure improvement plans over the next five years, with the aim of having signed agreements by March 2026.
The 10 major capital projects span seven wastewater treatment sites and two water treatment sites, and are designed to improve infrastructure resilience, environmental performance, and support population growth across London and the Thames Valley.
Thames Water is now inviting potential suppliers and contractors to demonstrate, via the PSQ, that they meet the essential criteria to progress to the next stage of procurement for these projects.
As part of its ongoing engagement with the supply chain, Thames Water also welcomed prospective bidders to its Reading offices on 18 September, as part of the formal launch of its procurement process. The water company said the event provided an overview of what to expect as part of the procurement process as well as a review of the outcomes of the company’s preliminary market engagement phase.
Tim Horton, Major Projects and Programmes Director at Thames Water, said:
“Our purpose is to deliver life’s essential service, so our customers, communities and the environment can thrive. We’re embarking on a record £20 billion investment over the next five years to transform our infrastructure, enhance environmental performance, and deliver better services for our customers.
“Building long-term, collaborative relationships with experienced delivery partners, so we can deliver at pace, is critical to the success of our AMP 8 programme.
“The launch of our Procurement Specific Questionnaire and recent supplier engagement event mark important milestones in our journey to strengthen our procurement process and ensure we’re ready for the formal bidding phase in November.”
The projects form only one part of Thames Water’s ambitious £20 billion infrastructure investment programme and will include the following sites:
Wastewater Treatment Sites
Riverside Sewage Treatment Works
Beckton Sludge Powered Generators replacement
Beckton Sewage Treatment Works Water Asset Assurance Programme
Crossness Sewage Treatment Works
Didcot Sewage Treatment Works
Wantage Sewage Treatment Works
Bicester Sewage Treatment Works
Hogsmill Sewage Treatment Works
Water Treatment Sites
Ashford Water Treatment Works (Ultraviolet Treatment)
Hampton Water Treatment Works (Ultraviolet Treatment)
Subject to governance and procurement procedures, Thames Water aims to enter into framework agreements with selected partners by the end of March 2026, and award the above initial tranche of 10 projects. The bidding process for these projects will start in November 2025. Additional projects will then be added to the framework in AMP8 (2025 to 2030) and AMP9 (2030 to 2035).
