The Pump Centre’s Pumping System Design Guide is Live!

As part of the Pump Centre’s commitment to collaboration and innovation throughout the UK water industry, we are proud to announce the publication of the Pumping System Design Guide (Second Edition).

Level 1, 3 and 4 Pump Centre members can now access the second edition of the Pumping Systems Design Guide from their membership dashboard free of charge.

A Design Guide for the Practising Engineer

The Pumping Systems Design Guide was first published in 2008 as an aide-memoire for engineers to streamline system development and avoid common operational and maintenance pitfalls.

The second edition of the Design Guide is a comprehensive document covering essential information regarding the design of pumping stations and pumping systems. It serves as a single point of reference for the design, installation and commissioning of a pumping system, specifically those using centrifugal pumps in wastewater and sewage applications. System design is a substantial topic area to cover, this guide has been developed as a support tool for designers and engineers navigating complex projects.

What’s Included in the Design Guide

In order to best serve the needs of its users, the Pumping System Design Guide is formatted in three parts for convenience and ease of use.

Part 1 contains a high-level ready reference checklist of the necessary actions to be taken from initial design through to commissioning of a pumping installation.

Part 2 contains basic theory and concise explanations of the reasoning behind the points made in the first section.

Part 3 contains references to sources of third party information that support the guidelines, provide more detailed reading, and a greater depth of information for those wishing to research the subject further.

The Design Guide will be subject to regular reviews to ensure the most accurate and up-to-date information is contained within the document, so that Pump Centre members with access will always have the most current data to reference.

UK water industry professionals across many different areas of the sector will be able to find essential information and guidance within the Pumping Systems Design Guide. From engineers called upon to design a pumping system, design managers needing to evaluate systems submitted for approval, to asset managers approving a pumping system on behalf of a client, anyone requiring a comprehensive breakdown of the design process can consult the guide at any point in the design process for information and clarification.

Supporting the UK Water Industry at Every Level

The Pumping System Design Guide is a Pump Centre initiative that supports UK water industry professionals in their day to day tasks.

Pumping system design is a complex task which requires input from many different areas of mechanical and electrical engineering. A good design results in a reliable, good quality pumping system which performs as needed. The Design Guide is another tool in an engineer’s repertoire to help them work efficiently and to a commonly recognised standard. With it, industry professionals can avoid common problems and be confident in the operational capabilities of their designed pumping system. With this guide's publication, the Pump Centre continues to expand its contributions to the sector, providing firm technical foundations upon which the water industry can build and thrive.

The Pumping Station Design Guide is Going Digital
